Who We Are & What We Do
Nelson Hardiman represents healthcare providers, including hospitals, physician organizations, long-term and behavioral care providers, and other healthcare-related organizations, in business litigation, transactions, and regulatory matters. Although we are based in California, our attorneys are routinely asked to advise business organizations that are national in scope. For more than 20 years, our lawyers have focused on regulatory compliance, litigation, and transactions specific to the healthcare industry. We combine specialized experience in a wide range of healthcare sectors with a proactive and attentive approach, making us the most effective choice for healthcare legal matters.
If you are facing a HIPAA compliance problem, a DEA investigation related to controlled substance record-keeping, or a Medical Board complaint, we’ve defended clients in your position and know the landscape better than anyone. If you are unsure how to organize your business to comply with California-specific requirements, such as the corporate practice of medicine or the Knox-Keene Act, we’ve guided others and will give you the direction you need. Whether you are a hospital, skilled nursing facility, residential treatment center for addictive disorders, a home health agency, or hospice, we understand your world. We make it our business to understand state-specific requirements and federal Medicare, FDA, and other regulatory issues. Healthcare today is regulated by an “alphabet soup” of agencies enforcing an endless list of laws and regulations. We’ll guide you through it. Clients hire us because we are:
- Specialized: We stay current with frequently evolving California and federal healthcare laws and regulations for the benefit of our clients. Ask us if you are unsure, but chances are, if your business is healthcare-related and in California, we have the experience you are looking for.
- Responsive: We understand that our clients don’t have time for delay or lawyers who are too busy to help. We return phone calls and respond to emails promptly. Our firm is built on a team-based approach that ensures the help you need in a hurry.
- Proactive: Extensive experience in crisis response gives us an unparalleled ability to not only navigate, but (when possible) to avoid altogether critical and costly legal problems before they threaten our clients’ businesses.
- Attentive: We are passionate about our clients and treat their problems in the healthcare industry as if they are our own. We are careful and collaborative. Our goal is to allow clients to rest easier knowing that we are “in it” with them.

Community-based non-profit groups regularly contact our attorneys to provide healthcare-specific pro bono assistance to clients in need. Among other non-profit recipients, we have provided pro bono services at the request of the Disability Rights Legal Center of Loyola Law School, the Jewish Hospice Project-Los Angeles (JHPLA), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Careers with Nelson Hardiman
Nelson Hardiman is always looking for outstanding attorneys, paralegals, and support staff to join our firm. We are passionate about the work that we do and take great pride in providing great service and results to clients in a team-oriented workplace environment that encourages collaboration, camaraderie, and trust.
Candidates for any position should possess strong academic backgrounds, good interpersonal and communication skills, and be committed to working hard to exceed client expectations. We value prior healthcare-related experience or training.
Experienced Attorneys (Laterals):
Nelson Hardiman is interested in experienced attorneys who are focused on healthcare law and whose experience, skills, style, and values are a good fit for our firm. Our hiring profile has historically included a record of academic achievement, prior practice and good training at another firm practicing at a high level, the ability to keep up in a fast-moving and dynamic practice, the ability to think creatively and critically to problem-solve in complex, regulatory environments. We look for candidates who are highly team oriented, accountable, self-motivated and eager to jump in when clients and colleagues need help. We put a premium on likeability, ego-free interaction, and not taking ourselves too seriously. For the right candidate(s), we offer an extreme level of participation and transparency in our business and invest heavily in professional development, marketing our people, and cultivating attorneys with the expectation of partnership. We are looking.
Occasionally, we initiate searches to meet particular needs, but we are always interested in hearing from experienced healthcare law attorneys who are interested in considering Nelson Hardiman as a new home.
Healthcare Law Fellows:
In September 2011, Nelson Hardiman established the Healthcare Law Fellowship, a program for new attorneys. The Fellowship is intended to expose recent law school graduates to healthcare legal issues and offers an excellent opportunity for new lawyers both to receive training and exposure to the field of healthcare law and to work on issues related to the advancement of the interests of healthcare providers. Fellows will receive a stipend. Candidates should have strong academic credentials and a demonstrated interest in healthcare law. Although the Fellowship position is intended to be time-limited position with the firm, we anticipate that, in the future, it may become a significant recruiting source for junior attorneys, with Fellows being considered for full-time associate positions in our firm.
Nelson Hardiman does not operate a Summer Associate program because we have found that our practice is better-suited to candidates who have at least 2-3 years of experience before they join us. Please email email@example.com, for timing of consideration.
